Your metabolism slows down the older you get and when this occurs, more weight is gained. This is especially true for women who are experiencing menopause. When this normal event occurs, your fatty tissue that is found in the hips, legs, and arms, migrates more toward the abdominal region. This problem seems to affect more men than it does women.

Hormones change during this process which contributes to the problem. Since hormones play an important roll is getting rid of fat, this change causes fat deposits to gather in the belly. Less exercise and physical fitness along with hereditary can contribute as well.

Breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and high blood pressure are some of the risks one might face if belly fat is not handled properly. Issues with the gallbladder and diabetes are also a result. Heart disease and cardiovascular disease pose a problem as well.

A few measurements can determine if you are classified as having excess fat. Simply measure your hip and waist area. Try to avoid calculating your body mass index because it will not provide an accurate answer if you are experiencing menopause. To do this, use a tape measure around your waist and hip area to get a measurement. This needs to be done at the navel and while breathing regularly and maintaining a normal posture. If the number is 35 or more, then certain steps need to be taken as this measurement indicates an unhealthy condition. Research has noted that even 33 inches poses a risk no matter what someone's weight may be.

Although many people believe that subcutaneous fat causes the problem, this is incorrect information. This type is the kind you can see and grasp. While it may be unpleasant for an individual to see, it poses less of a threat. Visceral fat is actually the big issue. While it cushions the internal organs and is found inside the belly, to much is harmful.
